Our friend Julia is a fashion designer, working primarily with what I like to call “knit couture.” She is an incredible talent. Recently, she showed me some of her amazing new bridal designs. Julia is beginning to step into the wedding area, as she is currently designing a friend’s gown, who is to be married on Martha’s Vineyard in September. Also, she has her first special commission for a wedding next July. I think her work is so sexy and fresh. Each dress is completely one of a kind.

The first dress is entirely knit by hand with antiqued ribbon and pearls.

The second gown with the rose train was draped and sewn by hand with fabric that Julia designed on a small circular knitting machine. It is trimmed in pearls.

The third gown, is made of fine silk embroidery thread knit in an openwork pattern. It is incredibly delicate. Its upper bodice and lower skirt are hand-knit with strands of pearls.

Julia describes her love of “the idea of dressing a bride in a gown that is, in essence, her own little ‘treasure’ — something handmade with an heirloom quality that will be passed down to her daughters and to theirs.”
